Dr. Saugata Banerjee
Director, J.D. Birla Institute
After completing an MBA from the University of Massachusetts (USA) and a PhD in Management (Finance) from INSEAD, Fontainebleau (France), Dr. Banerjee started his career as Assistant Professor of Finance in Koç University, Istanbul (Turkey) and Visiting Professor of Finance in Goteborg University (Sweden). Subsequently, as a management consultant in Boston (USA), Dr. Banerjee advised Fortune 500 companies on competitive strategy and finance. Later, as Executive Director, he led the global software business of a large Indian conglomerate, with presence in various continents, where he spearheaded the complete turnaround of the ailing company. This included the acquisition, integration and management of a South African software company with Pan African presence. While with this conglomerate, Dr. Banerjee also architected and launched an education business for them, which grew to 12 higher education centers and 12 K-12 schools with over 6,000 students within a span of 3 years. Dr. Banerjee has also been an entrepreneur, successfully launching a series of food brands. Dr. Banerjee’s academic research papers have been published in internationally reputed journals like Journal of Development Economics and European Financial Management Journal.

Dr. Tapobrata Ray is the Principal of J.D. Birla Institute, Kolkata, and an accomplished academic administrator with extensive experience in higher education, management education, and institutional governance. Having been associated with the Institute since 2003, he has contributed significantly to its academic growth, administrative development, and student-centric initiatives.
Prior to assuming the office of Principal, Dr. Ray served as Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor and Head – Academics in the Department of Management, where he was entrusted with the academic and administrative responsibilities of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme. His role included academic planning, curriculum delivery, student mentoring, admission coordination, and faculty management.
Dr. Ray holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Calcutta, with research focused on managerial decision-making and the cultural dimensions of the business environment. He completed his MBA with specialization in Human Resource Management from B.E. College School of Management Sciences (presently IIEST Shibpur), securing a high First Class. He also qualified the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) in Sociology and secured a First Class in M.A. Sociology from the University of Calcutta.
As Principal, Dr. Ray remains committed to strengthening academic excellence, promoting ethical and value-based education, encouraging interdisciplinary learning, and fostering a progressive institutional environment aligned with contemporary educational needs. Under his leadership, the Institute continues to emphasize holistic student development, innovation, industry interaction, and academic quality enhancement.
Dean of Sciences

Dr. Samita Gupta is the Dean of Science at J.D. Birla Institute, with 28 years of teaching experience and over 20 years of research expertise in Textiles and Clothing. She holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Home Science (Textiles & Clothing) from the University of Delhi and a Ph.D. in Home Science (Clothing & Textiles) from Banasthali Vidyapith.
She has played a significant role in curriculum development and academic advancement across applied science disciplines, including Fashion & Textiles, Food & Nutrition, Interior Design, and Applied Psychology & Behavioural Science.
Her research focuses on sustainable textiles, circular fashion, natural fibres, and eco-friendly apparel design. Dr. Gupta has published extensively in reputed journals and has received recognition for her research contributions, including awards for Best Paper at national seminars and conferences.
